People spent more money playing the lottery last year than on books, video games, and tickets for movies and sporting events combined.  Americans in the 43 states where lotteries are legal spent $70 billion on lotto games in 2014.  That’s more than $230 for every man, woman, and child in those states.  Why do people seek wealth in an elusive lotto game when all that they need is in their own backyard?

A few weeks ago I had a dream, or it may have been a daytime vision.  I don’t really remember.  What I do recall is the vividness of pictures, ideas, and thoughts that carried through my mind, and tussled in my heart.  For simplicity, and to help others relate, let’s pretend my dream was a movie.  Here’s the first reel.

I was in my own backyard digging a hole for planting a fir tree.  My experience with planting trees successfully starts with making a hole large enough for the tree’s root bulb.  As I began to aggressively dig the hole, I came upon what appeared to be a gold nugget.  At close inspection, it sure looked like one.  Although, I had no experience panning for gold and wouldn’t know a real gold nugget if I had found one.  But, in my dream, this was the real deal.  I had found a gold nugget in my own backyard.  I set my shovel aside and continued to dig more carefully with a spade, expecting to find more.  I put the gold nugget next to the dirt pile.  I was expecting.  Within seconds, there’s another gold nugget, and another.  Before long, there was a pile of gold nuggets next to the hole.  Who knows how many more gold nuggets were in the ground of my own backyard.  I was rich.  So I thought.  After all, this was a dream, which I’m revealing in a movie-like format.  Second reel.

It was suddenly revealed like the lifting of a heavy fog that the gold nuggets in my own backyard were a metaphor for wealth within.  Within what?  Within my body’s mystical place, heart, or soul?  Weird.  In this dream, I came upon the knowledge of a spiritual well; a deep reservoir of everything I’d ever need in life.  The gold nuggets in my own backyard were the physical manifestation of the wealth of the Holy Well.  Really?  As the dream continued to meander in that place between actual subconscious and conscious, confirmation arrived in a series of flash-backs of overcoming a motorcycle accident, cancer, self-worth and identity, tenuous jobs, and marital brokenness.  How did I persevere through all those messes except through the grace of a Holy Well? Third, and final reel.

To understand this dream, how it’s possible to have such a dream, one must believe in God; the maker of Heaven and Earth, and all things in the Universe.  It follows that the dream continued with a myriad of sounds and images from sermons, faith books and movies, Christian people I admired, and a lifetime of intermittently attending church.  The dream reached a crescendo of magnitude that I awoke as if I thought an earthquake had begun.  At first, I was struck by how shaken I felt.  After that, I was in awe of what I had experienced.  Life changing.  Is there evidence of the Holy Well I had dreamt about, the gold nuggets in my backyard?

To make sense of the dream, I searched for biblical truth to confirm the Wealth of the Holy Well; that place within my own backyard where gold nuggets dwell.

“But whosoever drinketh of the water that I shall give him shall never thirst; but the water that I shall give him shall be in him a well of water springing up into everlasting life” (John 4:14)

“But you will receive POWER when the Holy Spirit comes on you…” (Acts 1:8)

“Submit to God and be at peace with him; in this way prosperity will come to you.” (Job 22:21)

Forget the lotto, or any game of chance.  Recommend we start digging in our own backyard.  There, we find our wealth, truth, hope, and the way forward in all circumstances that life may throw at us.  It’s been within us all the time.  Let’s discover the Wealth of the Holy Well:  grace of forgiveness, healing, and spiritual prosperity.
